By SiddSingh
One look at shutter shades, and you will be left wondering – WHAT are they? Are they really sunglasses? Well, shutter shades are one of the coolest and hippest accessories to have hit the fashion circuit in recent times. Celebrities are wearing them, wannabe celebrities are wearing them, and everyone else in between is also wearing them. So, what is it it attracting people in droves towards these rather weird looking glasses?
Shutter Shades Sunglasses
Well, weird they are – some people call them downright silly! Why SHOULD someone wear these strange eyewear, which first made their appearance in the 1980s, and were creatively nicknamed “Venetian Blinders” - the resemblance with Venetian blinds was so obvious. Sometimes the shutter shades are also called “shutter shades sunglasses”, though very few of the designs can be called “sunglasses”.
At its most basic, the shutter shades are a frame with a number of horizontal slats, generally of the same material (usually plastic). As opposed to normal sunglasses, most of the shutter shades do not provide substantial eye protection – the eyes are still exposed to light and UV rays – though a small degree of protection is provided from a glare that may come from an angle – such as that from an overhead source.
With all these qualities, it is no wonder that many people are intrigued by the craze for shutter shades. But obviously, there are a lot of die-hard fans too, who consider them to be the very definition of cool! And in large enough numbers that justifies a number of makers selling shutter shades designs. Youngsters have connected spontaneously to these shades, and wear them as expressions of creativity and ‘just for the fun of it’ . Shutter shades have rapidly become a part of the popular culture, and have been sported by many celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Ashlee Simpson and most notably, Kanye West. So, youngsters everywhere are buying shutter shades in heaps (they are really cheap!) to flaunt their style, and some have even accumulated collections in every possible shade and design!
Shutter shades designs have also been changing and evolving over the years to suit the ever changing tastes of youngsters, who are the obviously the main wearers of these glasses. Though the horizontal shutters remain the perennial favorites, there have been rather, ummm, ‘creative’ innovations, and now we have shutter shades with vertical slats, or diagonal, or half horizontal, or half vertical, or half vertical/half horizontal slats.
Shutter Shades "Glow in the Dark"
Glow in the dark shutter shades are the hippest accessories for those who frequent discs and clubs. As their name so well indicates, these shutter shades glow in the dark, and come in all shades of psychedelic colors – green, yellow, red and even hot pink shutter shades are available. You got to admit – it is really a cool sight when you see all those frames glowing in the dark! No wonder, youngsters swear by them!
Shutter Shades with Lenses
Shutter shades with lenses can definitely qualify as sunglasses – they have lenses fitted in the frame in addition to the slats or shutters, and can provide the needed protection from the elements and UV rays. Not to mention that they can make you look absolutely cool! If you really want to buy a pair of shutter shades with lenses, there are a number of options available on Amazon.com. You can take your pick from a number of colors and designs, and you are sure to get a good deal on the price front too!
